BERNAT ARMANGUE/AP In 1959, a clandestine group of exiled activists founded the Palestine Liberation Movement in Kuwait, known by its reversed Arabic acronym, Fatah. These activists, who came from a collection of pan-Arab, Socialist and Islamist movements, abandoned their previous commitments to prioritize a new mission: the "liberation of Palestine." Yasser Arafat quickly emerged as the leader of this movement, which was at various times targeted by different Arab security services. Arafat later recruited Mahmoud Abbas, the current Palestinian president who was then living in Qatar, to help develop Fatah's networks in the Gulf region.
