Telangana to revive Pranahita-Chevella project, seeks Maharashtra’s approval for barrage
The Telangana government has decided to revive the Pranahita-Chevella lift irrigation project, seeking Maharashtra's approval for constructing a barrage at Tummidihatti village at a height of 150 meters. The project, initially launched in 2008 and later replaced by the Kaleshwaram scheme, aims to utilize 100 tmc of water for irrigation and drinking purposes across several districts. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials to initiate dialogue with Maharashtra and seek support from Union minister G Kishan Reddy.
- ▪The Pranahita-Chevella project was originally conceived in 2008 to harness water from the Pranahita river, a tributary of the Godavari, for irrigation and drinking water supply.
- ▪The Telangana government plans to construct a barrage at Tummidihatti in Komuram Bheem district at a height of 150 meters to utilize at least 100 tmc of water.
- ▪Maharashtra had previously agreed to a 148-meter-high barrage at Tummidihatti, and officials believe a 150-meter structure would submerge only about 300 acres in Maharashtra.
- ▪The earlier Kaleshwaram project, which replaced Pranahita-Chevella, involved three barrages that were damaged in floods in October 2023.
- ▪Approximately ₹11,000 crore has already been spent on the Pranahita-Chevella project, with 71.5 kilometers of canal construction completed.
