Yesterday, Valve announced release details for the Steam Controller, alongside reassurances that its Steam Frame and Machine gadgets are still on track for future release. The Steam Deck 2 has yet to have firm updates, but Valve confirmed it remains in development. In a conversation with IGN, Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais said, “We’re hard at work on it” when asked about a second-gen Steam Deck. However, there’s no clear release window, and further comments suggest it may still be a long way from release.Griffais said, “And obviously every step of the way, if you look at our hardware projects over the years, you can draw a straight line from the original Steam Controller and Steam Machine to Steam Deck, to everything that we're announcing and shipping this year. And we expect Steam Deck 2 will be a lot of the same, where a lot of what we're doing here will be learnings that build up to it.” You May Also Like window.videoEmbeds = window.videoEmbeds || []; let data = {}; data.excoPlayListId = '68408b61a852ebf5b843845e'; data.excoPlayListVideos = {"114d9a38-4f0b-51df-96bf-0c6785d2d62e":"07jFdmd5WVWHDVYaCAyIjyq","31aa685d-f1d3-5fa5-bddc-9c18bef1c60d":"03I0GFDWOd3v7vrBoIkQgHA","445b4887-00ec-4346-a8d1-3bd1fc563102":"05cXgZiQ86JtIL25qCnz37C","4b7e6612-32ed-5d39-b259-399e146f8c81":"07lCXLkCiVGBnmpEPObIiFT","61200a70-1f93-57ca-b7b1-26d6d6aa7b5d":"01byqte4pLN3y6rUs9wwnvY","63e45618-614a-4033-852d-76ea08d67111":"03yDZ1UAinTmntSNZjSj8PU","69bf5ab3-5bf4-4e28-8404-be7ec51bf272":"06tU9Vng53gGIUBGJQhGqMR","6f133ad0-533d-4bb5-96ef-cfba48913663":"02z4h2Gp3RAqwcRSz05RlSs","84a5477d-912b-5a8a-aa6e-4e9863a2162e":"07ksZhT0cPuskG50DNLPCCr","86092863-b547-59a8-8688-1737bd4f1730":"06vxWdwSvZb5iHmAHvVCB8z","a39ab273-f87c-4c26-87d9-4d7eca43a608":"03MzbWptD3blMfvMDN0h3H1","a3dd1d53-adf1-5224-b620-59df819c1043":"01JQhSe5DlKa2u7jm2gUbaT","a783df6b-52d1-44ca-8275-a13c85f978c5":"07mrDPLwc83g5tMZzrg3xMZ","abd4cdb3-84da-5b7b-aedc-a0f460e36972":"02YJPLWdiipfqOpeQnRnfTl","ad7ce3cd-4724-5c0f-97c4-93c79be38f44":"04trQ1rW4tB9368TYzXKvHG","b16a40d7-5c03-434d-a043-aaf352ecc6b7":"06NWyJxrPbpIZTuuRwfl3KM","d600a7d3-2464-4e6c-ab2c-5cf8cb89f187":"07LaT0M89yUtIj4WSczjfsZ","d65adb1d-6db7-428b-8e4f-4e6760132555":"00k7SisZhjxeQoLGdhY3J7X","e65d6c92-50aa-4a6f-b548-81eeef5b38cd":"05uRJ9UTHTqKiZHiZLtytEq","f49abd71-519e-50a3-9bc8-d54c6018903c":"01oa4p9rNiNuCFZEwI4LkHh"}; window.videoEmbeds.push({ elemId: 'video-container-68408b61a852ebf5b843845e', data: data, videoPlayerType: 'related-contextual', variation: 'INJECTED', }); The original Steam Deck is now four years old, having launched in early 2022. Many of Valve’s rivals have released multiple generations of handheld gaming devices since the original Steam Deck, but Valve is holding fire. A year and a half after the first-gen Steam Deck, Valve updated the handheld with a mid-gen refresh, the Steam Deck OLED, featuring an improved screen.Griffais told IGN in November 2025, “We're not interested in getting to a point where it's 20 or 30 or even 50% more performance at the same battery life.” He also said Valve planned improvements to bring what he called truly next-gen performance.Even further back, in late 2023, Valve told The Verge that a Steam Deck was at least a couple of years away, leading some to speculate we may have seen a new handheld at the end of last year or in 2026. Although Griffais' latest comments don't confirm that we won't see a Steam Deck 2 as early as this year, it sounds like development isn't far enough…
