Putting Animals on the Map
OpenStreetMap aims to create a community-driven map that reflects local geographic knowledge. However, there is a significant gap in mapping animal-related infrastructure and land use, particularly in rural areas where animal husbandry is prevalent. This oversight highlights the bias in the mapping community, which is largely urban-centric and underrepresents the importance of livestock and wild animals in ecosystems.
- ▪OpenStreetMap's mapping of animal-related infrastructure is marginal and often focused on pets.
- ▪The mapping community is predominantly urban, leading to a disconnect with rural animal husbandry practices.
- ▪Existing tags for agricultural land use and animal grazing are limited and not well differentiated.

A very good example to illustrate this mismatch between the ideal and reality of OpenStreetMap is animal related infrastructure. Animal husbandry is of enormous economic and social importance in huge parts of the world and accounts for a substantial portion of landuse world wide and wild animals and structures they create form a significant part of ecosystems. This is, however, not reflected in practical mapping in OpenStreetMap.
