With over 65,000 participating restaurants across more than 80 countries, OpenTable seats the most patrons—1.9 billion per year—of any dining reservation platform. OpenTable has also been booking reservations since 1998, which means the company sits on a coveted trove of customer data, from dietary restrictions to special event logs and time spent dining annually. “Those nuggets of information are critical to running a productive restaurant,” says CEO Debby Soo. “Restaurateurs want to use that [data] to provide more meaningful, magical hospitality moments for their guests.” However, over the last decade, a group of challengers have encroached on OpenTable’s turf—particularly Resy, which was acquired by American Express in 2019 and is known for its partnerships with buzzy restaurants.
