Lost ‘cloud’ of artist who wrapped the Reichstag to be created in UK gallery
A long-lost installation design by artist Christo, conceived in 1968 but never realized, will be brought to life at Gagosian London. The work, titled Package on a Ceiling, features a large, internally lit form resembling a cloud suspended just above head height. The project is based on a scale model and drawings rediscovered in Christo's studio in 2018, six years after his death.
- ▪Package on a Ceiling was originally conceived for the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia but was never built due to technical constraints.
- ▪A detailed scale model of the installation was discovered in 2018 inside a hollow plinth in Christo’s studio by his studio manager, Lorenza Giovanelli.
- ▪The exhibition will run from 21 May to 21 August 2026 at Gagosian London, located at 20 Grosvenor Hill, W1.
- ▪Christo and Jeanne-Claude were known for large-scale, temporary public artworks using everyday materials, often involving years of planning.
- ▪The installation will measure 16 meters long and 10 meters wide, filling the entire volume of the gallery space.
