Do not open until July 4, 2276: U.S. buries a ‘zombie-proof’ time capsule
A 2,000-pound stainless steel time capsule will be buried in Philadelphia on July 4, 2026, to celebrate the U.S. semiquincentennial and preserve a snapshot of American life for 250 years. Engineers from NIST and preservation experts from the Library of Congress collaborated to design the capsule to withstand environmental challenges, including flooding and seismic activity. Originally intended to be part of a monument, the capsule was redesigned for underground burial due to structural concerns with the granite sculpture.
