His grief-stricken mother died a day later on Friday morning.According to sources, Mariappan (51) from Athikattanur near Tharamangalam worked as a DMK booth agent at Athikattanur on Thursday. He fainted after coming out of the booth in the afternoon for lunch. Other DMK cadre took him to government hospital, Tharamangalam, but he died on the way.Upon learning about her son’s death, Palaniammal (75) refused to have food; she fainted in the house on Friday morning and died, according to sources.Minister for Tourism and Salem central district DMK secretary R. Rajendran paid his respects to the deceased and, on behalf of the DMK, handed over ₹5 lakh to Mariappan’s wife, Radha.
